BiographyHistory

Charles Hutchins had enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in Bunbury on 5 March 1915. By June, he was assigned to the 28th Battalion, and embarked on the HMAT Ascanius A11 at Fremantle. Admitted to hospital at Anzac Cove due to illness he was evacuated to Netley Hospital in England. Upon discharge he was assigned to Belguim, where he sustained near fatal injuries and the effects by mustard gas, again he was to spend time convalescing. On 19 April 1919, Hutchins was decommissioned back to Australia, where he had suffered all his life with his injuries and effects of mustard before he died at the age of 59.
