    Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is included in AustLit because it has been produced in Australian theatres during the colonial era and is the subject of Australian literary comment, adaptation and creative writing in a variety of narrative forms.

  • Romeo + Juliet / Baz Luhrmann (1996)

    An adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set in the contemporary city of Verona Beach.

    The Montagues and Capulets are two feuding families whose children meet, fall in love, but hide their relationship from their disapproving parents. There are also other obstacles in the way, such as Juliet's cousin Tybalt and Romeo's friend Mercutio.

    'I am Juliet closely follows the well-known and loved plot of the play, but we also see the point of view of Rob, the thirteen-year-old boy who is the first to play the role of Juliet on the Elizabethan stage.
