Author's note: 'Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Australian painter Rupert Bunny, painted a portrait of Madame Sadayakko, a famous Japanese actress. His painting depicts Madame Sadayakko dressed in a flowing white kimono. She is turned away from the viewer, her face partly obscured by one raised arm.'
