The narrative sees Chic telling his mate Joe the story of King Alfred, with the account interspersed with Joe's memories of battles on the western front. The pre-production manuscript version held in the Pat Hanna Collection, Performing Arts Centre (Melbourne) includes references to Don Bradman.
