This article considers the importance and relevance of teaching poetry in schools and tertiary institutions. Its aim is to equip teachers with knowledge and passion so that they can successfully engage students. It first engages briefly with the debate about poetry's precarious status in contemporary culture, then discusses metaphorical thinking, and offers suggestions for exercises and poems that can be used in class.
