Author's note: The Usual Excuse: As this Great Work proceeds, more and more facts leak into it, and the original grand ideal of keeping the serious historian and the school-master at arm's-length fades away. Both the author and his life-long friend, the incometent illustratot, have come to the conclusion that the job of distorting the entire history of a continent could only be tackled successfully by a Chinaman who had wrecked his intelligence with opium. Anyhow, this literary omnibus stops at every corner, and those who don't agree with the change of pace can get off. Gee-up!
