In France during the early part of the reign of Louis Phillipe, an abbot assists a condemned highwayman to escape from prison. Years later they meet again, the criminal now with a family who shelters the priest from a storm. Slight. (PB)

A sober businessman in a country town is ruined by the double-dealing of an apparently scrupulous friend, and eventually recovers part of his fortune through a fortunate bet on a country steeplechase. Interesting for its reversal of the usual course of a young man's ruin, and for its detached account of horse-race betting. Stodgy style. (PB)

The daughter of a minister in Scotland is obliged to travel to London alone in a railway carriage and assists an escaping criminal. Slight but interesting moments; purports to warn of the dnagers of young ladies travelling alone. (PB)

A mother's schemes to marry her sister's widow in Melbourne and collect his money, and for her son-in-law to court the daughter and prevent her marriage so that she might lose her inheritance come to nought when through the love and honesty of her own daughter. Disguise, intrigue and foreign titles. (PB)

A mature man dreads the arrival of his young ward into his bachelor establishment but over a year comes to value her musical, literary and personal gifts - and romance follows for both. Slight. (PB)
