BiographyHistory

Nancy Wake was born in New Zealand and her family moved to Sydney when she was 20 months old. She left home when she was 16 and soon afterwards travelled overseas, finally settling in France with her husband.

During World War II, Wake worked for the French Resistance against the occupying German army and helped Allied soldiers and Jews escape. To the Gestapo, she was known as 'The White Mouse' and she became the most decorated servicewoman of World War II.

Wake spent the final decade of her life in London. She died at Kingston Hospital in London.
