Cinesound Studios: The building at 65 Ebley Street, Bondi Junction, which later became the first Cinesound studio, had previously been used as the Centennial Roller Skating Rink. The building was taken over in 1925 by the Australasian Films/Union Theatres consortium which converted it into a film studio and began making silent films. Interestingly the company still allowed the building to be used at night by skaters so as to help pay for its lease. By 1934 the studio employed 144 people permanently and 450 casuals. Cinesound also operated two additional studios - one at nearby Rushcutters Bay and the other in the Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda. The Bondi Junction site was known as Studio No. 1.
