In 1992 Nicholas Burns completed his PhD on Christianity and modernism in American literature. He subsequently taught at several schools in the north-eastern United States, joining the faculty of the New School in 1995. He has been associated with the Australian studies journal, Antipodes, since 1993 as a review editor and was appointed editor in 2001. Birns maintains a strong interest in Australian literature, publishing many articles and reviews. He has also conducted regular seminars and university courses on Australian literature.
