Sydney James began his theatrical career playing various London concert rooms as a singer, comedian and mimic in the 1890s and in 1900 formed The Strolling Players. Originally a trio The Players later expanded to a six to eight member costume comedy troupe, and in 1911 became known as The Royal Strollers. Prior to its arrival in Australia the Strollers appeared constantly throughout the British Isles, in addition to touring South Africa (4 times) and the USA.
A gifted variety entertainer and producer, James' most popular act was undoubtedly his 'partnership' with his dummy, named 'Billy.' James and his troupe remained in Australia between 1914 and 1919, playing engagements for
J. and N. Tait, the
Tivoli circuit and
Fullers Theatres (Australia and New Zealand) among others. In 1918 he changed the name of the troupe to the Pierrot Pie Company, and the following year undertook tours of New Zealand and India.
James died unexpectedly in Pakistan in 1919 when his appendix burst during the troupe's journey from Bombay (India, now Mumbai) to Kararchi.
