BiographyHistory

In 1918, cartoonist Stan Cross accepted a position with Smith's Weekly which paid £5 a week; he eventually became this journal's highest paid artist and second art editor. During his twenty years with Smith's Weekly, 'Cross developed into one of Australia's finest black-and-white artists and the country's foremost "single-panel" cartoonist. His bold comic-art presented an array of "typical" Australians, from farmer and jackeroo to digger and doctor'.

  • The December 1924 issue of the Home contains a selection of caricatures by Stan Cross. The section, 'My Contemporaries', comprises humorous biographical notes (by R. J. H. Moses) with accompanying Cross caricatures that depict R. J. H. Moses, Arthur Adams, David McKee Wright, Adam McCay, Christopher Brennan and Monty Grover.
