A children's adventure story about a lonely boy's love for kangaroos. Billy lives with his widowed mother on a Queensland farm. One day, much to Billy's dismay, his mean-spirited neighbour has a group of kangaroos drugged and removed from his property. A young kangaroo of whom Billy has grown fond is left behind without a mother. Billy teams up with Linda, the free-spirited daughter of an American ambassador, and the two youths head to Sydney to reunite Joey with the kidnapped kangaroos.
